The Evolution of Electroplating: New Standards for Chrome Plating and Surface Treatments: Regulations, Trends, and Innovation
The electroplating industry is currently at a crucial crossroads. While traditional chrome plating faces unprecedented regulatory pressure, chemical and technological innovation is paving the way for safer, higher-performance treatments. It is no longer just a matter of compliance, but a true redefinition of surface excellence through a sustainable lens.
The changes go beyond chrome plating: the entire sector is evolving rapidly. From the electroplating of precious metals to that of nickel and zinc-nickel alloys, and on to the complex challenge of metalizing plastics, the industry is rewriting its own standards.
Organized by UMICORE, with the sponsorship and support of A.I.F.M. – the Italian Association of Metal Finishes, the conference is designed as a forum for technical and strategic discussion and will consist of two main sessions.
Part One: Focus on Chrome Plating
The opening session will examine the current state of the art in chromium plating, with particular reference to the current regulatory framework and a focus on the transition from hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) to solutions based on trivalent chromium (Cr(III)). Particular attention will be paid to the evolution of electrode components, comparing the efficiency of platinum-coated anodes for thick-film chromium and mixed-metal oxide (MMO) anodes for trivalent chromium.
The goal is to chart a course that combines high industrial performance with environmental responsibility, making chrome plating processes sustainable and compliant with current regulations.
Part Two: Other Treatments and New Technological Boundaries
The second part will address developments in other electroplating processes that are essential for the modern market. We will delve into innovations in the electrodeposition of precious metals, nickel, and zinc-nickel alloys, analyzing new requirements for corrosion resistance and deposit purity. Particular attention will be given to plating on plastic (POP), exploring alternative technologies to overcome current regulatory restrictions on the use of toxic substances.
Thanks to contributions from experts in both industry and academia, as well as the combination of Umicore’s expertise and the institutional support of A.I.F.M., the conference will offer a comprehensive overview of current technical and regulatory challenges. Participants will thus be equipped with the tools needed to turn regulatory constraints into concrete competitive advantages in the global market.
Attendance at the conference is free of charge, subject to registration. Registration will open shortly.
