Umicore launches the world's widest range of fully recycled precious metals

Metal Deposition Solutions

Thanks to the Umicore Group's leading global position in metal recycling, we can now offer you the world's most comprehensive range of fully recycled precious metals under the brand name Nexyclus™. This not only helps us to counteract the global scarcity of resources, particularly for platinum group metals (PGMs), but above all enables you to plate precious metals responsibly - to support your sustainability goals.

With Nexyclus™, you invest in platings that have a reduced carbon footprint and are responsibly produced

With Nexyclus™, we guarantee you 100% high-quality recycled precious metals from reliable sources that meet our strict guidelines for responsible procurement. You have the choice between various offers that differ in terms of Chain of Custody (CoC) certificates and the process flow. Of course, all our Nexyclus™ certificates are verified by independent  auditors*.

Certificate 1
Material Segregation

This certificate is a transfer document that automatically accompanies every shipment of CoC recycled products. It is available for CoC recycled gold, silver, platinum and palladium and can only be issued when linked to physical CoC metal units that have been refined by authorized sites.

The Responsible Jewellery Council, London, (RJC) is the world's leading organization for setting sustainability standards for the jewelry and watch industry. Given the restrictions that the RJC standard places on acceptable recycled materials, the RJC-CoC certificate provides the greatest possible transparency for recycled precious metals that we can offer.

This requires strict segregation of the entire recycling and production facility for CoC products. Within these separate streams, eligible CoC materials from different sources are mixed as they have the same defined standard.

The RJC chain of custody certificate is represented by the chain of custody transfer document that comes with each chain of custody product offered by Umicore and uses the RJC definition of recycled material.

The auditing firm KPMG was commissioned to verify and certify Umicore's compliance with the RJC-CoC.

Attributes

  • High traceability: the document is linked to a corresponding physical quantity of a CoC product made from CoC-recycled precious metal

  • Umicore certified recycled material

  • Responsible sourcing in accordance with RJC and LBMA/LPPM/RMI

  • Refining under demanding technological and EHS conditions, ISO-certified sites and processes

Certificate 2
Mass Balance

This certificate, which is available for silver, gold, platinum, palladium and rhodium, can only be issued if it is linked to physical metal units that have been refined by Umicore.

Mass balance means that both primary and recycled materials are processed together in one process. The proportion of recycled material is recorded in a rolling balance and allocated to an equivalent of the refined metals produced. This gives this equivalent quantity 100% recycled status. We can guarantee this thanks to our globally recognized expertise in sampling and testing as well as strict metal accounting.

The mass balance certificates are offered by Umicore using the ISO14021 definition of recycled material.

Mass balance is one of the chain of custody standards described in ISO22095.2020. The auditing and consulting firm PwC is commissioned to verify and certify this solution.

Attributes

  • High traceability: the certificate is linked to a corresponding physical quantity of refined precious metal from Umicore

  • Umicore's certified recycled material

  • Responsible sourcing in accordance with LBMA/LPPM/RMI

  • Refined under demanding technological and EHS conditions, ISO certified

Certificate 3
Book & Claim

This certificate, which is available for silver, gold, platinum, palladium and rhodium, is linked to a metal transaction from Umicore to the beneficiary of the certificate. It essentially works like a book & claim certificate backed by metal transactions.

The availability of book & claim certificates correlates with Umicore's production volumes. However, these certificates are not directly linked to the physical flow of refined precious metals from our production facilities. Instead, they can be linked to precious metals of equivalent quality that are responsibly sourced from other refineries and currently in our possession.

This solution is critical for non-physical precious metals transactions as it further enhances the responsible and sustainable sourcing of these metals.

Book & Claim is also used to process transactions in which precious metals are not delivered to the end customer in pure form, but are further processed into high-quality salts and solutions for electroplating via additional production steps.

The Book & Claim certificates are offered by Umicore using the ISO14021 definition of recycled material.

Book & Claim is one of the Chain of Custody standards described in ISO22095.2020 and the auditing and consulting firm PwC is commissioned to audit and certify this solution.

Attributes

  • High flexibility: no mandatory physical transportation of metal

  • Umicore's certified recycled material

  • Responsible sourcing in accordance with LBMA/LPPM/RMI

  • Refined under demanding technological and EHS conditions, ISO certified
